History of Tea Cultivation

Commencement of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka
The first tea plant in Sri Lanka was planted in December 1839. The successful experiment was carried out at the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens by a Scotsman named James Taylor. G. H. K. In 1867, James Taylor planted tea plants in the Peradeniya Gardens on a 21-acre plot of land in Lulkandura, Deltota, Kandy, which he had brought from the Assam region of India as a research experiment in the Peradeniya Gardens.
